EALTHY is committed to improving the knowledge, skills and techniques of English for Healthcare teachers wherever they may be. Professional development is at the core of what we do.
We host regular professional development webinars on a wide variety of topics, from developing materials to medical humanities to preparing students for OET. These are free to everyone to attend via the Events page. The recordings are also available, but to members only in the Resources section.
On this page, you will find courses that will make your lessons more interesting, effective and fun to teach.
This course, written by EALTHY founder Catherine Richards in partnership with SLC, is an essential introduction to the world of Medical Humanities – what it is and how it can be used to develop your English classes and engage your students.
This 10-hour professional development course consists of video explainers from experts, a range of texts and reflective tasks, case studies, and multiple links to useful resources. At the end of the course, you will be asked to write a lesson plan using what you have learnt and think about how you can apply it to your students. You can share this with your colleagues or ask an EALTHY expert for feedback and advice.
You can study the course in your own time or incorporate it into your team’s development programme. Note that when you buy the course, you will be taken to the SLC website to complete your purchase.
DIGITAL COURSE
This 30-hour course, written by EALTHY President, Professor John Skelton, is for healthcare and pharmacy researchers, professionals and students who want to publish research articles in English in international journals.
Writing for Publication teaches the structure and language needed to publish. It articulates the conventions used, analyses multiple examples, provides tasks to complete, and describes the submission process. By the end of the course, learners will have a clear idea of what they need to do to have their research successfully published.
The course works seamlessly on PC, tablet and mobile phone. The teaching platform enables lecturers and teachers to work collaboratively with their students, track their progress, set assignments, leave feedback and use the tasks in their programmes.
The course focuses on quantitative research and has a strong, practical focus at all times. It is easy to follow and combines insight and expertise with humour and engaging activities throughout.
HYBRID COURSE
Writing for Publication is available as a hybrid course for closed groups from an institution, offering two 1.5-hour workshops with experienced published writers, including Professor Skelton.
The workshops focus on what participants need to do to get their research published, including proofreading, editing, preparing a paper, journal selection, and the submission process. Attendees get input and feedback so they can be clear on the next steps they need to take to submit their research articles for publication.
These sessions are designed with groups of up to 12 participants in mind, but can be adapted to different size groups or individuals. Workshops are given on Zoom but in-person sessions may be arranged on request.

As increasing numbers of universities and schools around the world adopt English as their main language in the classroom or lecture hall, many lecturers need to learn the English necessary to teach their subject effectively in English.
While lecturers are experts in their fields, they may lack the language skills, fluency or confidence required to give memorable and well-managed presentations, seminars, classes and tutorials in English.
EALTHY works with closed groups of lecturers from a university, college or school. Detailed needs analysis is carried out, ensuring that the training targets the specific needs of the participants. Programme modules may include giving instructions, giving feedback, managing pairs and small groups, giving presentations, and leading discussions. There is a strong practical focus throughout.
Courses may be intensive over one to three days, for example, or extensive, with shorter sessions delivered over a longer period. Training may be online, face-to-face or blended.

This EALTHY training course familiarises teachers with the different papers of the OET test – their formats, sections and question types (formats, question types), the challenges candidates commonly face, the current materials landscape, key classroom strategies to use when teaching and giving feedback, and the test marking criteria, especially for the Writing and Speaking papers.
