The introduction of the latest invention of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool known as ChatGPT has become a hot topic recently. Like any other technological developments, the algorithm-driven chatbot has its benefits and challenges. But really it all depends to what extent the user allows the machine to take the lead in processes such as language teaching/learning, creative writing and translation.

ChatGPT is a “generative pre-trained transformer” which can generate both texts and pictures which look very much as if they had been created by a human. This main feature represents two sides of the same coin. ChatGPT can be considered as a means to speed up the writing and translating of a text. Conversely, there is a high risk of weakening cognitive abilities, losing motivation to learn grammar and to verify facts. All this can lead to plagiarism and production of a text which can contain ambiguous utterances and critical errors in subject matter.

ChatGPT has quickly become an attractive topic for research in a wide range of scientific fields. For example, research conducted by Naomi S. Baron, Professor Emerita of Linguistics at the American University, Washington, D.C , asked young adults for their opinion on AI assistance. The findings revealed a negative attitude towards the use of ChatGPT in text production. In particular, the respondents listed issues such as losing the ability to spell when relying on predictive text and spellcheck features, getting lazy and taking the easy way out of writing assignments, and losing their own writing voice and unique writing style. In her article, Professor Baron refers to the philosopher Evan Selinger who “is worried that predictive texting reduces the power of writing as a form of mental activity and personal expression.” Selinger also believes that “automation can stop us thinking”.

However, there are those in favour of ChatGPT. It is said that AI can strengthen writing skills by providing immediate feedback on a learner´s piece of writing. In this way, it saves a teacher time to concentrate on other tasks such as creating lesson plans, doing research, professional development and administrative tasks. From the teacher´s perspective, ChatGPT can be used as a source of ideas for lesson planning and generating materials aimed at showing the drawbacks and risks of inaccurately produced texts by Artificial Intelligence. For example, teachers can ask students to proofread a text, verify information or assess the quality of writing style.

Despite the initial scepticism and the fear of excluding the teacher in the teaching/learning process, many other software technologies have eventually found their place in the modern classroom. We can´t stop the development of advanced technological inventions. But what we can do is to implement them wisely in our activities and teach our students and colleagues to do the same.
