Project AVTIA Empowering Lecturers in Audiovisual Translation: The Curious Case of Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDH) In partnership with SLC

The AVTIA project is an Erasmus+ project co-funded by the European Union dedicated to designing study materials for lecturers and students interested in audiovisual translation, i.e. audio description (AD) for the blind and visually impaired, and subtitling for the deaf and hard-of hearing (SDH). In this webinar, Danka and Irena will showcase the study materials created by the team of the University of Belgrade to consolidate the essentials of subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing in an effort to empower lecturers in audiovisual translation and improve access to education and information in light of the WHO stats estimating that 5% of the world’s population (430 million people) live with disabling hearing loss.

Applying Corpus Linguistics to Illness and Healthcare In partnership with SLC

This webinar introduces the book ‘Applying Corpus Linguistics to Illness and Healthcare’, which was published by Cambridge University Press in September 2025. The book presents, in an accessible manner, the questions, data, methods, findings and potential applications of a large research programme at Lancaster University that applied Corpus Linguistics to a range of topics in health communication. The book also reveals the challenges, setbacks and compromises that the researchers experienced during the research, alongside the breakthroughs and successes. The webinar will focus on selected strands of the work presented in the book, specifically to do with communication about pain, cancer and vaccinations. During the Q&A, there will be opportunities to discuss the relevance of this work for the teaching of English for healthcare, as well as for healthcare research and practice. Innovating Medical English Teaching with AI | Symposium 2025

Innovating Medical English Teaching with AI provided a range of thought-provoking presentations and discussions on AI usage in teaching and learning English for healthcare.

The event focused on the current and future role of AI in clinical communication and medical education from multiple perspectives.

Semmelweis Medical Linguistics Conference: Ambiguity and risk in healthcare communication 5-6 June 2026

The 2026 edition of a hybrid conference will gather researchers and practitioners from linguistics and healthcare to examine how communicative strategies influence meaning, trust, and patient safety.

The thematic scope includes, among others, patient-centred communication, medical translation and interpreting, terminology, pragmatics, artificial intelligence, metaphors, speech analysis, medical documentation, and languages for specific purposes.

Following the conference, participants will be invited to submit their manuscripts to the Semmelweis Medical Linguistics Investigations series, published by Peter Lang. All submissions will be subjected to peer review and will be automatically considered for indexing.

31 December 2025 – early bird abstract submission

31 December 2025 – early bird registration

31 March 2026 – standard abstract submission

30 April 2026 – standard registration
