“Our patient’s here”: Distributed Leadership and Teamwork in Emergency Care In partnership with SLC

In this talk, I explore how leadership and decision making are interactionally accomplished in complex, high-stakes emergency care events. I focus on how health professionals coordinate action through talk and embodied practice while balancing competing demands and finite resources. Drawing on completed and ongoing research in secondary and pre-hospital care, I examine how leadership is claimed, negotiated, and distributed, and how decision making emerges through negotiated commitment to action. I discuss the P.A.T.H.S. framework, -Participants, Artefacts, Transition Stages, Historicity, Setting- (Angouri et al., 2024), for studying the trajectory of decision making, before closing with reflections on how socio/linguistic research can inform emergency care training, policy, and public awareness.
