The Use of Translation Apps in Australian Healthcare Settings

Rapidly developing translation technologies have also found their way into healthcare settings. In Australia, healthcare professionals and non-native English-speaking patients with limited English proficiency can use translation apps in simple everyday clinical interactions when a professional translator is not at their hand.

Recent research compared features of iPad compatible apps and revealed that the most suitable ones are CALD Assist and Talk To Me, both developed in Melbourne, Australia. The apps are intended to help patients from “Culturally and Linguistically Diverse” (CALD) backgrounds with basic interactions with healthcare professionals. Content of preset phrases was created by healthcare professionals in cooperation with certified translators and interpreters.
